How to Bathe Your New Baby First
Bathing your new baby for the first time can be daunting, but with some preparation and gentle care, it can be a wonderful bonding experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process- Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need within arm’s reach
- Soft washcloths
- Mild, fragrance-free baby soap and shampoo
- A cup for rinsing
- A soft towel or hooded baby towel
- Clean clothes and a fresh diaper
- A basin of warm water (for sponge bathing) or a baby bathtub
2. Prepare the Bath Area
Ensure the room is warm enough to keep your baby comfortable, ideally around 75°F (24°C). Fill the baby bathtub with just a few inches of warm water (around 2–3 inches). The water temperature should be around 98–100°F (37–38°C). Use your wrist or a thermometer to check.
3. Undress Your Baby
Undress your baby and wrap them in a soft towel to keep them warm while you start bathing.
4. Sponge Bath (for newborns until the umbilical cord stump falls off)
Lay your baby on a flat, safe surface such as a changing table or a soft towel on the floor Use the damp washcloth to gently wipe your baby’s face and scalp, starting with the eyes (wipe from the inner corner outward) and moving to the rest of the face. Wet the cloth again and gently clean around the neck, hands, and outer areas of the ears (avoid inserting anything into the ear canal). Clean the diaper area last, ensuring you’re thorough but gentle.
5. Tub Bath (after the umbilical cord stump has fallen off)
Gently lower your baby into the tub, keeping one hand on their back and head for support. Use a cup or hand to gently pour water over your baby’s body to keep them warm. Apply a small amount of baby soap to the washcloth and gently wash your baby’s body, starting from the top (head and neck) and working your way down. Be sure to clean all the folds and creases. Rinse your baby thoroughly with clean, warm water.
6. Dry and Dress Your Baby
Lift your baby out of the tub, supporting their head and neck, and immediately wrap them in a soft towel. Pat your baby dry, dry all the creases and folds. Apply any necessary diaper creams and put on a fresh diaper. Dress your baby in clean clothes.
Additional Tips
Always keep one hand on your baby when they are in the water. Keep the bath short, about 5–10 minutes, to prevent your baby from getting too cold.
Never leave your baby unattended in the bath, even for a moment.
Bathing your baby can be a wonderful bonding time and creating a routine. As you become more comfortable, the process will become more enjoyable for you and your baby.
