Tips to Keep Babies Comfortable During Hot Weather (Especially Without AC)
Babies often feel restless and sweaty in the heat. These suggestions can help relieve discomfort
Trim Hair Short: Keep your baby's hair short during the warmer months to prevent excess sweat.
Daily Bath Routine:
- Allow your baby to bathe in a bucket of water up to chest level for about 20 minutes daily. If the weather is hot, bathe between 11 AM and 2 PM.
- Daily baths are beneficial if your baby is healthy, has no fever, and is gaining weight normally.
- Before bed, give a quick 10-minute bath to cool the baby’s body. Let them play in the water, then dry their head and ears thoroughly. A cuddle and a milk feed afterward can soothe them while boosting immunity through your warmth.
Appropriate Clothing:
- Dress your baby in light, thin, cotton fabrics. Avoid leaving them completely without clothing and avoid synthetic materials like nylon.
- Use light-colored clothing, such as white, rather than darker colors that absorb more heat.
Keep Cool with Fans: If possible, ensure proper air circulation using a fan while keeping the airflow gentle and comfortable for your baby.
Hydration: Offer water based on the baby's age and ensure they stay hydrated.
Ideal Sleeping Setup:
- Lay your baby on a low-temperature mattress covered with cotton fabric.
- Avoid using thick bedding or keeping the room cluttered with clothes, as it can trap heat.
- Cover windows with thick curtains to block out direct sunlight, especially after 2 p.m., as it can significantly increase the room temperature.
Skin Care:
Prevent Dust and Allergens:
- Sweep and mop floors regularly to minimize dust buildup. When dust mixes with sweat, it can cause irritation.
Monitor Body Temperature:
- Ensure your baby’s body temperature stays below 37°C. If they seem restless, loosen their clothing, offer a feed, and ensure proper ventilation to cool them down.
Clean Living Space:
- Declutter and keep the baby's room clean and free of flies or mosquitoes to avoid skin rashes or diarrhea. Use safe pest control methods as needed.
Final Note for Mothers: A baby rarely cries without reason. If hunger, fatigue, heat, or loneliness are ruled out, they are likely trying to communicate their needs to you. Trust yourself to understand your baby's cues, as no one knows your little one better than you do. π
